The Votes Are In: The Triffid Announces 2022 Qld Album Of The Year

Last night, beloved Brisbane venue The Triffid celebrated the 8th edition of its annual Queensland Album of the Year event, as always setting the stage for a spectacular showcase of local music and allowing the community to come together to cheer on a stacked line-up of emerging talent. 

In recent years, the competition has applauded an array of Queensland favourites including The Chats, Tia Gostelow, Cub Sport and Busby Marou, as well as hardcore outfit Stepson taking out last year’s 2021 title.

At the helm of the evening, the results of the votes were announced with Gold Coast alt-rock outfit Mass Sky Raid taking out the crown for the Album of the Year for their explosive record Calm In Chaos, which now adorns The Triffid’s coveted ‘Hero Wall’ mural alongside local legends The Go-Betweens, Regurgitator, Custard, Violent Soho, Ball Park Music, Dune Rats and Powderfinger.

Emceed by the sparkling Sellma Soul, festivities for the 8th birthday bash began with a bang, featuring intimate cover performances honouring each of this year’s six nominees. 

Brisbane-based singer-songwriter neish kicked off the night with a stripped-back, heartfelt rendition of Eliza & The Delusional’s Save Me, followed by Darcie Medlyn of The Buzzing Towers taking on adored local punk act Semantics. Aisling O’Byrne of the formidable disco-pop four-piece Dizzy Days then halted the crowd in its tracks with a goosebump-inducing belt of Jaguar Jonze’s KNOW MY NAME, next welcoming Charles Sale of Babaganouj to the stage, tributing long-time friend and bandmate Hatchie with a sunshine-soaked cover of her hit This Enchanted. 

Rounding out the night was Connor Wright of indie surf-rockers The Bluebottles with a syrupy acoustic set of Shag Rock's Wild Thing, and then lastly Zach Britt of Dream On Dreamer covering this year’s Album of the Year winners Mass Sky Raid, before mischievous musos City Piss closed the show and wrapped up The Triffid's treasured tradition for another year.
