Tony Hawk Returning To Australia For 2024 Tour With THPS Cover Band

Tony Hawk has announced his hotly awaited return to Australia, adding a three-date tour of the east coast to his itinerary for January 2024.

The speaking tour – dubbed An Evening With Tony Hawk – was originally scheduled to go down in April of 2020, but was (inevitably) cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For this (painfully overdue) reschedule, Hawk will take to stages in Eora/Sydney (hitting the Enmore Theatre on Friday January 19), Naarm/Melbourne (The Athenaeum on Monday January 22) and Meanjin/Brisbane (The Triffid on Thursday January 25).

Tickets for all of the shows go on sale this Thursday (October 5), with a presale kicking off tomorrow (October 4). VIP packages (which include a limited skate deck signed by Hawk) will be available for all three shows, as will passes that include a meet-and-greet with Hawk himself.

The shows won’t see Hawk perform any sick-as skateboarding tricks – unless he breaks out a board by surprise – but instead see him deliver talks on his whirlwind career, from his early rise to stardom in the ‘90s to the launch of his mega-hit game series Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, to his present-day role as a motivational legend (and founder of The Skatepark Project, a nonprofit foundation which has helped fund more than 600 skate parks across the US).

According to official copy from Bird’s Nest Productions, the talks themselves will see Hawk cover “all his highlights and even some of the lows”. All three shows will be opened by Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of a Tony Hawk Pro Skater Cover Band), whose name kind of does the trick in explaining what their schtick is. The Sydney-native band cover songs made iconic by the Pro Skater soundtracks – including tracks by the likes of Rage Against The Machine, Millencolin and (of course) Goldfinger – and have long been acclaimed by Hawk himself as one of his favourite bands.
