It’s been a HUGE week for new indie, hip-hop and EDM releases – not only did we get fresh new tunes from some of Australia’s finest up-and-comers, like Miss Kaninna (who just dropped Push Up), Becca Hatch (who blessed us with Crash) and KLP (whose new cut Come Thru is destined to be a hit), but the international heavyweights were out in full force: Headie One came in hot with his wicked new banger Make A W (featuring Skrillex, AJ Tracy and BEAM), for example, while Omar Apollo delivered another instant classic in Done With You, and Lil Nas X got his fans going absolutely mental with HERE WE GO!
With all of that in mind, now seems like as good a time as any to remind you – or clue you in, if you didn’t know already – that we have our very own playlist dedicated to bringing you the best new music from the underground and beyond, fittingly named Purple Sneakers’ Best New Music. We update it every Friday with more than a dozen of the brand new tracks we simply can’t get enough of, giving you the ultimate soundtrack to power your weekend.
You can listen to Purple Sneakers’ Best New Music on Spotify (here) and Apple Music (here) – and make sure to hit us up on Instagram or Facebook to let us know what songs you’ve been loving!
Here are just a few of our personal favourites from this week’s update to the playlist...

WHAT SHE SAYS: “[This song was inspired by moving to Naarm/Melbourne], enjoying meeting new people, feeling good about myself and being free in my sexuality, not being worried about what other people think. Push Up is a really good introduction to the range and the diversity in my music -–and it was just such a fun song to make. I've always been a singer, but some people don't know that I make that kind of music. You're getting to know me more, coming and stepping closer to me.
“It's about being really fluid, not worrying about labels or genders or anything like that, love is free and we love who we want – being ourselves 100 percent is so important. My favourite lyric would probably be, ‘I got no problem with speaking my mind, can you keep up babe?... You could be mine.’ Working with Jacob Farah has been an incredible experience – as two Black artists, we wanted to deliver music that has the potential to stand up against international acts, music that feels good, music for our communities and music we wanna listen to.”
WHAT SHE SAYS: “Crash is a song about being in the midst of what feels like a really hard time. Feeling like everything is weighing on you and it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I wrote this song during a time I felt like that. While the sentiment of Crash and the themes are quite sad, after some time spent healing, the song developed into a song about hope; a love letter to myself, to remind myself that I am loved and worthy.”
WHAT HER FAMILY SAYS: “When we, Sophie’s family, took our first steps towards bringing this project to fruition we contacted the dear friends with whom she envisioned the album. We wrote, ‘We have been finding comfort in the music Sophie left us, it is a gift that we truly cherish as we try to find a way forward, with Sophie forever at the center of our worlds.
“Sophie didn’t often speak publicly of her private life, preferring to put everything she wanted to articulate in her music. It feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most.
“This album has always told the story of Sophie’s musical journey, a cacophony of skill and creative vision, eclipsing time and genre. Her unique sound world moves at an emotional level, encouraging the listener to intuitively embrace the ever-evolving landscape of light and dark, soft and hard, to the end of self-love and joyful self-acceptance. Emphasising contradictions of sound and material, Sophie’s work supersedes the pure aural to create the dimension she dreamed of.
“Now, it holds another poignant meaning, it tells a life story, from mysterious unknown, through wild clublands, to euphoric immateriality.
“Sophie gave all of herself to her music. It’s here that she can always be found.””
