English musician Romy Madley Croft dropped a bombshell about indie-pop favourites The xx over the weekend, revealing that the band are working on a new album.
New music from The xx follows their 2017 third album, I See You, which came after their 2012 LP Coexist and seminal 2009 self-titled debut.
Backstage at Beyond The Valley festival over the weekend – Romy is touring in support of her 2023 solo debut album, Mid-Air – NME Magazine asked Romy about the experience of being back in the studio with her bandmates Oliver Sim and Jamie xx.
“I think Oliver and Jamie and I have all tried new things and learned a lot from different projects, and I think that’s quite healthy to be like, ‘What have you learned? What should we do now?’ And I think it’s quite wide open, and it’s exciting to be starting again in a way,” she told NME. “But we’ve started making some music, and I’m really excited about it.”
On the sound of the group’s new music, she added, “It’s still pretty early. I still think you’ll be able to tell it’s us, but I think we’re excited to move it on and keep it feeling fresh.”
