The Smile (the supergroup-of-sorts comprising Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood with Tom Skinner of Hello Skinny fame) have returned with another bewitching preview of their upcoming second album, alongside news of a special event for cinemagoers around the world.
The new song, Friend Of A Friend, arrives as our third preview for The Smile’s next LP, Wall Of Eyes (itself due out on January 26 via XL Recordings and Self Help Tapes), following the release of Bending Hectic last June, and the album’s title track last November.
It’s accompanied by a fittingly cinematic video directed by the iconic Paul Thomas Anderson (best known for helming classics like Boogie Nights, Magnolia and There Will Be Blood) – you can take a look at it below, or you could hold out and watch it on the big screen, alongside a full-album playback of Wall Of Eyes in surround sound, at a special in-person event being held later this month.
The event – specifically dubbed Wall Of Eyes, On Film – will be hosted by independent cinemas across 13 global locations. Sydney (Eora) will be treated to two screenings, both taking place on Tuesday January 23 at the Golden Age Cinema. RSVPs for the two local events will open at 9am tomorrow (January 11) – head here for more info on how to secure your spot.
In addition to the aforementioned Friend Of A Friend clip and Wall Of Eyes playback, the intimate presentations will feature screenings of the title track’s music video (also directed by Anderson), as well as the director’s past collaborations with Yorke – the ANIMA short film, and the music videos for Radiohead’s Daydreaming, Present Tense and The Numbers.
