The 1975's Matty Healy Covers Colin Hay's 'I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You'

When Matty Healy finally responded to Noel Gallagher’s recent barbs towards him and The 1975 earlier this week, he also covered one of our favourite music icons: Colin Hay.

While we mentioned that the cover took place this week, footage has finally emerged of Healy covering Hay’s I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You.

On Wednesday, 7 June, The 1975’s tour opener Caroline Polachek had to pull out of the show just hours in advance as she had lost her voice. Healy ended up opening the show for his own band at St. Anne’s Park, Dublin.

Performing a few The 1975 live debuts, Healy went back in time to 2020’s Notes On A Conditional Form and brought out Then Because She Goes and Playing On My Mind for the first time.

He also inserted two covers: Donny Hathaway’s A Song For You, which he played with the band’s touring guitarist Jamie Squire, and of course, Colin Hay’s 1998 ballad, I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You. View the footage below.

“Noel Gallagher called me a ‘slack-jawed fuckwit,’” Healy told the Dublin audience during his opening slot, addressing Gallagher’s recent comments. “I love Noel Gallagher. We asked Liam to open up and he said he would have done it but he was busy. But I love Noel Gallagher, give it up for Noel Gallagher.

“He’s just getting on … The difference between me and Noel is that I do a series of interviews to promote an album, whereas he does an album to promote a series of interviews. But we love you Noel, get Oasis back together!”

Healy’s response came after Noel Gallagher called the singer a “slack-jawed fuckwit,” labelled The 1975 “shit” and “certainly not fucking rock”. The feud between the pair began when the Chocolate singer insisted Oasis get back together.

“Can you imagine being in potentially – right now, still – the coolest band in the world, and not doing it because you’re in a mard with your brother?” Healy said in an appearance on Q with Tom Power.

He continued, “There’s not one kid, not one person, going to a High Flying Birds gig or a Liam Gallagher gig that would not rather be at an Oasis gig.”
