SZA Responds To Melbourne Punters: 'If You Throw Something Else, I Will Leave'

SZA told off punters at her first show at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena this week (29 April), threatening to leave early if anyone threw anything at her while performing.

According to users on TikTok, people in the crowd allegedly threw phones and shoes at the Kill Bill singer while she was signing merchandise for some lucky fans from the stage.

“If you throw something else, I will leave,” she said, warning the audience that “crazy behaviour” wouldn’t be tolerated. “Do not throw up any cell phones,” she continued. “I’m a person. That’s crazy.”

Another TikTok user, Ali, addressed the alleged incident, writing: “WHO THREW THE FUCKING SHOE AT SZAS HEAD… SHE DEF HATES MELB NOW. She deadass got pissed… ‘if you throw one more thing at me ima hit you.”

On X (formerly known as Twitter), another person addressed the moment, writing, “heard someone threw a phone and shoe at SZA in Melbourne. what is wrong with you guys??”

Weeks ahead of the shows, SZA revealed who the support act would be for her New Zealand and Australian tour dates: Californian R&B curator SiR. 

A significant player on the ARIA and streaming Charts, the SOS tour marks SZA’s first time performing down under.

The singer was speculated to headline this year’s Splendour In The Grass before the festival announced its line-up and subsequently cancelled its event.

Since releasing SOS in December 2022, SZA has continued to release new work, with the latest single, Saturn, released on 22 February. The fast turnaround from last year’s album leaves much to speculation: Will there be a new project in 2024?

In the meantime, it seems the tour’s titular album will finally receive a Deluxe Edition. SZA posted to social media a few weeks ago: 

“Will be dropping the leaks and outtakes from SOS as promised as the deluxe ASAP. Lana deserves more time and music no one’s ever heard before seems fair. Bless”

SZA’s inaugural Australian tour concluded with a third night at Rod Laver Arena last night (2 May).

The alleged incident is part of a disturbing trend that saw country megastar Luke Bryan slip on a phone while performing just weeks ago, while Harry Styles was hit in the eye last year with a projectile a fan threw at him, and Bebe Rexha suffered a similar fate with a phone to the face.

The reasoning behind the bizarre behaviour is unknown, but The Music still dug deeper and investigated the death of concert etiquette last year.
