Sum 41 Looking For Ex Singer They 'Never' Saw Again After His Departure

Maybe their impending breakup has Sum 41 feeling nostalgic or All Messed Up. The Canadian punk rockers are reportedly looking for former vocalist Jon Marshall, who was in the band in the late ‘90s.

In a new interview in the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column, Sum 41’s longstanding vocalist, Deryck Whibley, said, “[The song Johnny Libertine from their new album] is a reference to Jon. He was the most punk-rock guy I have ever known.

“We were 16 when we knew him and he was in this delirium, no plan B, we destroyed everything. [laughs]. He was my best friend, then he left the group never to be seen again.”

In 1996, Sum 41’s former manager and producer, Greig Nori, watched the band perform but was unimpressed by Marshall on lead vocals and their songs at that stage. Nori convinced Whibley to take on lead vocals, a decision that culminated in Marshall's departure.

Whibley remarked that the band would love to reunite with their former bandmate ahead of their final gig in Toronto in January but said they have no idea where he is.

“Nothing at all,” he said. “I would like a ‘goodbye’.”

Sum 41 released their final album, Heaven :x: Hell, earlier this year. They will disband after over 27 years in 2025, but not before going on a final world tour. We’re just waiting on Australian tour dates.

“Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives,” the band wrote in a shock social media post last year. “We are forever grateful to our fans, both old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you, and we wanted you to hear this from us first.”

They continued, “Sum 41 will be disbanding. We will still be finishing all of our current upcoming tour dates this year, and we're looking forward to releasing our final album, Heaven :x: Hell, along with a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate. Details will be announced as soon as we have them.

“For now, we look forward to seeing all of you skumfuks on the road and are excited for what the future will bring for each of us. Thank you for the last 27 years of Sum 41.”
