Story Of The Year Turned Down The 'Spider-Man 2' Soundtrack

Story Of The Year vocalist Dan Marsala recently joined Neil Griffiths for a new episode of The Plug Podcast. The two chatted about the band’s upcoming appearances at Knotfest Australia, their new album, Tear Me To Pieces, out this Friday, 10 March, and Spider-Man 2?!

Marsala recalled the band’s record labels, Maverick and Epitaph, trying to push Story Of The Year to aim for Top 40 radio, but as he told Griffiths, “we made all the wrong decisions, we couldn’t do it.”

Later on, he said, “We turned down so many movie offers, crazy stuff… You start getting freaked out, feeling like, ‘I don’t know if we can handle all of that. We just want to be kids and to play music.

“Some things I look back on and I’m like, ‘wow, you’re an idiot,’” the singer laughed, “should have just taken that pay day and went for it… I’ll tell you, it was Spider-Man 2. The one that Dashboard [Confessional] ended up doing,” to which Griffiths responded, “Vindicated, no fucking way!”

Marsala continued, “Yeah, they offered it to us with Anthem Of Our Dying Day [from 2003’s Page Avenue] first and they wanted to put Spider-Man in the video, and we had just filmed the video with Joe Hahn from Linkin Park; the video that is out now.

“But they wanted us to replace some of the clips with Spider-Man footage, and we were like, ‘nah, man, people will make fun of us if we do that!’ But literally, it would have been the easiest thing ever, it would have been a massive hit, and it was like, why would we turn that down?! 

"We were just scared - we were scared of all the craziness that would come with that,” Marsala said, discussing what might have been the band’s biggest mistake with a smile on his face.
