“Well Trump, you took the country backwards 50 years. I hope your Dad is smiling and waving down on you from heaven, while his other hand holds a record of all the abortions you secretly paid for behind closed doors.”
The United States is a melting pot that has been living on a razor's edge for the better part of a decade; the Trump presidency, numerous mass shootings, the January 6 insurrection, Black Lives Matter, COVID-19….the list goes on. Musicians have vocally challenged America's lurch to the right and today is no exception.
Today, America has been dealt another major blow, with the US Supreme Court handing down a landmark ruling - the overturning of ‘Roe v. Wade’, a landmark 1973 decision that found there was a constitutional right to abortion. The court’s unprecidented move will allow more than half of US states to ban abortion, with an immediate impact on tens of millions of Americans, as the laws are now in the hands of individual states.
With individual states holding the power and the ability to decide what a woman can do with her body, it’s expected that abortion will be illegal in at least 16 states moving forward; if restrictions on abortion are considered, that number will likely move upwards to 23 states.
Artists across America have been quick to voice their opinions on the dramatic change.
Phoebe Bridgers, who has been widely outspoken about the battle over abortion rights in the US since news of Roe v. Wade’s impending overturn by the Supreme Court was first leaked earlier this year, used her recent set at Glastonbury to voice her opinions on the ruling.
“In all honesty, [Glastonbury] is like super surreal and fun, but I’m having like the shittiest day,” she told the crowd. “Are there any Americans here? Who wants to say ‘Fuck the Supreme Court’ on three?,” Bridgers shouted to see of tens of thousands, before leading a chant of “Fuck the Supreme Court!” before concluding, “Fuck that shit. Fuck America. Like, fuck you. All these irrelevant old motherfuckers trying to tell us what to do with our fucking bodies.”
Jack White has also used his platform to take a swing at Donald Trump, calling him out for numerous alleged abortions he’s paid for in the past:
“Well Trump, you took the country backwards 50 years. I hope your dad is smiling and waving down on you from heaven, while his other hand holds a record of all the abortions you secretly paid for behind closed doors.”
Harry Styles has also voiced his horror, labeling it a "truly dark day for America"

True. Yet, we can make it so, still. But it's up to all of us to demand it. We must challenge the anti-democratic forces that have hijacked our government. The late people's historian Howard Zinn said dissent is the highest form of patriotism. And we agree. https://t.co/NfuvJRJn3k
