Radio Birdman To Celebrate 50th Anniversary With ‘Special Farewell Performances’

Calling all Radio Birdman fans: we have good news and bad news.

The good news is, the iconic Aussie punks have announced a massive national tour to celebrate their 50th anniversary. And the bad news? It’ll be their last-ever run of shows before the band heads into hibernation once more.

Announced this morning (January 29), the tour will kick off with two shows in Melbourne (Naarm) – respectively going down on Friday June 21 and Saturday 22 – for which Radio Birdman will take to The Croxton alongside local outfit Civic. They’ll head to Adelaide (Kaurna) next, playing The Gov on Sunday June 23. Special guests for that one-off show are yet to be announced.

The following weekend – on Friday June 28 and Saturday 29, to be exact – Radio Birdman will perform at The Triffid in Brisbane (Meanjin) alongside Hits. And to wrap it all up, they’ll head to Sydney (Eora) for two shows at the Manning Bar, scheduled for Friday July 5 and Saturday 6, with support from the Hard-Ons.

It was confirmed in a press release that these shows will mark Radio Birdman’s last, with the band promising “a series of special farewell performances”. They’ll be accompanied by a reissue of the band’s 2014 release, Live At Paddington Town Hall 12th December 1977, which is set to arrive via Citadel Records in the not-too-distant-future (a concrete release date is yet to be announced).

Although their initial run lasted just four years – from 1974 to 1978 – Radio Birdman’s legacy remains untouched, immortalised as one of the most influential bands in Australian punk and rock history. They reunited in 1996, kicking on for another 12 years before they disbanded again in 2008. Their second reunion came in 2014, and they’ve been going on strong ever since.

Radio Birdman released three albums across their first two eras – Radios Appear in 1977, then Living Eyes in 1981 and Zeno Beach in 2006 – as well as the Buried And Dead / Ballad Of Dwight Fry double A-side in 2016. A documentary on the band, Descent Into The Maelstrom: The Radio Birdman Story, also arrived in 2018.
