Coverception
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but sometimes it's a perplexing thing too, as Perth band Hamjam found out recently upon discovering a familiar-sounding cover of iLoveMakonnen's Tuesday, featuring Drake, as performed by US prog/chill-rock prodigies Portugal. The Man.
Still with us? Either way, we'll break it down: When Portugal. were on tour in Australia, they saw Hamjam perform a cover of Tuesday in Perth. They liked it so much that they recorded a similar version of the cover, whereupon it lay dormant until a few days ago, when the band pointed to it out of the blue on their social media feeds, apparently spurred on by a recent headline over A$AP Rocky's LSD intake and sex life.
This AMAZING headline reminded us of a cover we recorded last fall in Australia with the beautiful @kirinjcallinan https://t.co/PaCZLBuZOH

Responses to the cover were mixed between being positive or suspicious of its similarities to Hamjam's version, the latter camp sufficient enough to drive Portugal. The Man to issue a tongue-in-cheek response a couple of days later.

Edit: We recorded a minimalist cover version of the minimalist song "Tuesday" for funsies after watching HamJam cover it in Australia. Dongs

Previously unaware of both covers and underground Grammy winning smash hits.

For their part, Hamjam don't seem to be enjoying things quite as much as the Alaskan outfit, taking to Facebook to issue a bemused response to Portugal. The Man's... homage?

Additionally, Hamjam took their grievances to the studio, putting together an ominous, lurching self-described diss track aimed at Portugal. The Man that sheds a little more light on their version of events, which seems to indicate the visiting US band actually recorded the cover while Hamjam performed it live, ostensibly for later reference.
The Aussie duo conscripted friends Doctopus and Catlips - part of loose WA collective the Char Kway Palz - to record the track, titled I'm Rich Bi$h - OutLordz and featuring frustration-loaded lyrics such as, "Go to a fuckin' show/ and bring your other fuckin' bros/ and bring your fuckin' iPhone/ film a band you don't even know."
Of course, it wouldn't be fair to put all this pressure on the cover that started it all without giving it its share of attention, so you can hear Hamjam's version of Tuesday below and decide which one gets pride of place on your iPod because you... you don't need both.
