Ozzy Osbourne has pulled out of his headline slot at Power Trip festival – the event that’s hosting Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, and Iron Maiden at the Indio, California home ground of Coachella in October – due to health concerns.

“As painful as this is, I’ve had to make the decision to bow out of performing on Power Trip in October,” the heavy metal music icon wrote on Instagram on Monday (10 July).

While the singer thought he could play the show, the recuperation period after a serious spinal operation has been longer than expected.

Osbourne explained, “My original plan was to return to the stage in the summer of 2024, and when the offer to do this show came in, I optimistically moved forward.

“Unfortunately, my body is telling me that I’m just not ready yet and I am much too proud to have the first show that I do in nearly five years be half-assed.”

Announcing that Power Trip festival organisers at Goldenvoice have already worked on a replacement, Osbourne revealed that the substitute is a band who “are personal friends of mine and I can promise that you will not be disappointed.

“Above all, I want to thank my fans, my band, and my crew for their unconditional loyalty and continual support,” he continued. “I love you all and I will see you soon. God Bless, Ozzy”.

Osbourne cancelled a European and UK tour in February, announcing his retirement from touring in an emotional statement.

“This is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to share with my loyal fans,” Osbourne wrote.

“As you may all know, four years ago, this month, I had a major accident, where I damaged my spine. My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak.”

In December, Osbourne expressed frustration about his condition.

In an interview on SiriusXM, the Crazy Train singer commented, "It is so fucking tough because, I mean, I want to be out there. I want to be doing it. This fucking surgery this guy did. Fucking hell, you have no idea."

The Prince Of Darkness added, "The thing is, my head is all right, my creativity is OK, my singing OK, but I just can’t fucking walk much now."

"I can’t begin to tell you how fucking frustrating life has become," he explained. "It is amazing how you go along in life, and one stupid thing can screw everything up for a long time. I have never been ill this long in my life."

In 2003, Osbourne sustained a broken collarbone, fractured ribs and damaged vertebrae in his neck in a quad bike incident; injuries were aggravated when he fell at his Los Angeles home four years ago.

Osbourne, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, was told that surgery would prevent him from becoming paralysed.
