Olivia Rodrigo Joins No Doubt In Coachella Reunion Performance

No Doubt returned to the stage for the first time in nine years on Saturday (13 April), reuniting for a special performance at Coachella and bringing Olivia Rodrigo on stage for a surprise collaboration.

Rodrigo joined the band during their main stage set in Indio, California, for a rendition of their 2000 single, Bathwater. The Good 4 U singer traded verses with her idol, Gwen Stefani. The pair hugged after the performance and excitedly walked off the stage together. No Doubt then played the instrumental, horns-only live debut of One Step Beyond, a Madness cover.

Last week, Rodrigo discussed Stefani and No Doubt’s impact on music and her career in Stefani’s expansive Nylon cover story interview.

“Gwen’s ability to evolve and explore different styles of music, songwriting, and aesthetic while still remaining true to herself is incredibly inspiring,” she said before elaborating on Stefani’s artistic evolution: “To me, she’s a prime example of an artist who defies stereotypes and preconceived boundaries and just makes stuff that she thinks is cool… If that’s not a true artist, I don’t know what is.”

She continued, “She unapologetically sings about things ranging from wanting to make out with someone to fantasising about having a husband and kids. There’s so much heart in every word she says, and every song feels like it’s ripped from the diary of the coolest girl you know.”

No Doubt opened their Coachella set with Hella Good before ripping into their greatest hits, including Ex-Girlfriend, It’s My Life, Just A Girl, Don’t Speak, Hey Baby and more.

Also in the Nylon interview, Stefani delved into the hardships of being a mum in a band and her regrets surrounding keeping No Doubt going while raising young children.

After learning she was pregnant with son Zuma, Stefani recalled, “I think everyone was disappointed,” referring to her No Doubt bandmates.

“I don’t think they would say that,” she added, “No one’s going to be mad you’re having a baby. But while I was busy, they were kind of waiting.”

Attempting to work on No Doubt’s 2012 comeback album Push And Shove became exhausting. She revealed, “I would be leaving my family. And if I didn’t come home with a song, I’d be like, ‘Oh my God, I’m such a loser—I didn’t have dinner with my family, and I didn’t write a song. I wasted an entire day of my life trying to be in No Doubt again.’”

She continued, “I look at it now and think, ‘God, what was I doing trying to please everybody?’ Because really, I should have just been with my family.”
