Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds To Make A New Album This Year

Nick Cave has wished fans a Happy New Year and offered some insight into his plans for 2023 via his trusted Q&A website, The Red Hand Files. 

Addressing a fan named Fred, who asked what the Into My Arms singer's plans are for 2023, Cave replied, "My plan for this year is to make a new record with the Bad Seeds. This is both good news and bad news. Good news because who doesn’t want a new Bad Seeds record? Bad news because I’ve got to write the bloody thing." The new Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds record will follow 2019's heartbreaker, Ghosteen.

He also shared some lyrics written on 1 January, such as "The frogs in the gutter are jumping for God/Amazed of love, amazed of pain/Amazed to land back in the gutter again".

Although, writing hasn't been an easy process. "And that felt like it summed things up. Writing lyrics is the pits. It’s like jumping for frogs, Fred," he wrote. Showing a sense of humour, Cave continued, "It’s the shits. It’s the bogs. It actually hurts. It comes in spurts, but few and far between. There is something obscene about the whole affair. Like crimes that rhyme. I hope this doesn’t last long. 

"I’m actually scared. But it always does. Last long. To write a song. You hope to God there is something left. You are bereft. I’m going to stop this letter. It isn’t making things better. It’s like flogging a dead horse. Worse. It’s a hearse. A hearse of dead verse. Dead, Fred. Dead." Read the rest of the Red Hand File here.

In a concert review of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis at Hanging Rock, The Music's Bryget Chrisfield wrote, "In light of the universal anguish, we've all faced these last couple of years, the music of Cave and Ellis takes on additional gravitas. The creative collaboration between Cave and Ellis is untouchable. They embrace at set's close, and their mutual admiration for society is always a joy to behold. We leave feeling as if we've been touched by the 'hand of God'."
