Morrissey Announces 2023 Australian Tour To Celebrate 40th Anniversary

Morrissey will return to Australian theatres this December (assuming he doesn’t cancel at the last minute), celebrating his 40th anniversary with a six-date run of career-spanning sets.

The outspoken ex-frontman of The Smiths will first take to the Perth Concert Hall on Friday December 1, followed by a pair of back-to-back shows at the Palais Theatre in Naarm/Melbourne (scheduled for Monday December 4 and Tuesday 5). After a quick dash up to play Meanjin/Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Friday December 8, he’ll wrap up in Eora/Sydney, playing the State Theatre on Sunday December 10 and Monday 11.

The tour is dubbed 40 Years Of Morrissey, promising sets that span “from the early days of The Smiths through to today”. They’ll be rather weighty sets if Morrissey plans to highlight all of his storied eras: he released four albums with The Smiths between 1984 and 1987, followed by 13 solo albums.

His most recent full-length effort was 2020’s I Am Not A Dog On A Chain, which was supposed to be followed up earlier this year by an album called Bonfire Of Teenagers. The LP’s release was ultimately cancelled (or as Morrissey himself claims, sabotaged) in February, and Morrissey instead plans to release a different album, Without Music The World Dies, later in the year.

Tickets for the 40 Years Of Morrissey tour go on sale at 9am local time this Friday (August 11), with a presale kicking off at the same time a day earlier (August 10). See here for more info on both sales.

Last month, Morrissey called out members of the music industry over their tributes to the late Sinéad O’Connor, calling them “sterile slop” and “insultingly stupid”.
