Missy Higgins has topped both the ARIA Australian Albums Chart and the national albums chart with her new album, The Second Act. The huge achievement comes 20 years to the day after her debut album, The Sound Of White, hit #1.
The Second Act is Higgins’ fourth album to top the ARIA charts, following 2004’s The Sound Of White, 2007’s On A Clear Night, and 2012’s The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle. Her 2014 album, Oz, 2018’s Solastagia and her 2022 mini-album, Total Control, reached #3 on the chart.
In early August, Lime Cordiale kicked off a long-awaited streak of Australian artists hitting #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart in 2024 with their latest LP, Enough Of The Sweet Talk.
Their album reaching the top spot was followed by Tones And I (with Beautifully Ordinary), Amy Shark (Sunday Sadness), and Cold Chisel (50 Years – The Best Of). After Sabrina Carpenter reached the #1 spot with Short n’ Sweet last week, we’re back to Australian music with Missy Higgins.
According to chart guru Gavin Ryan, Higgins's #1 hit with The Second Act makes her just the seventh Australian artist in history to hit the top spot in three consecutive decades. The achievement arrives ahead of the Scar singer's induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame this November.

Reacting to the news, Higgins said, “I owe my career to the audiences who have come and seen me play live. In the early days, when I was supporting lots of other artists, I usually signed CDs at the merch booth after my set.
“Lots of the same people I met way back then came to one of this year’s gigs – some of them even brought their kids - so this tour brought things full circle in all sorts of ways.
“The crowd support has sustained me through a very difficult period, so I’m sincerely grateful to everyone who has embraced The Second Act - it means more than you can imagine.”
She also shared a happy video on Instagram reacting to the news, which you can watch below.
Higgins hitting #1 in Australia with her latest album arrived with the news that her biggest show since 2005 at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl sold out yesterday, as did her concert at the Sydney Opera House Forecourt.
Her upcoming shows at Kings Park in Perth and three winery concerts for a day on the green—with special guests including Dan Sultan and Kate Miller-Heidke—are also selling fast. You can find more tour information here.
