Melbourne/Naarm trio Blusher have today (July 14) have shared their highly anticipated debut EP titled, Should We Go Dance?, serving us up the perfect soundtrack to night out thanks to its sparkly, energetic pop tracks.

Speaking on Should We Go Dance? Blusher shared, “Our debut EP feels like the ultimate night out with your friends. It’s packed with grit, glitter, confidence and chaos.”

“Each track correlates to a different part of the night; getting ready together, crush confessions in the bathroom, and yelling with your friends in the middle of the dance floor."

“They added, Should We Go Dance? encapsulates the wonderful range of emotions that we put on full display within female friendships.”

Following its First Play via triple j Good Nights on Wednesday, Blusher also share their latest single, Limelight, which followed their previous single, Dead End.

Speaking on how Limelight came to life, Blusher explains; “You’re cutting shapes in pink-lit clouds, yelling to your friends over the music."

Limelight is the point in the night when you muster the courage you need to confess your feelings to your crush, down a drink, and lead them onto the dancefloor.”

“This song started from a bassline while we were channelling the Black Eyed Peas. We were writing together in Lauren’s bedroom on a Friday night, and after a few hours decided to take the advice of our own lyrics and go out for a drink and a dance, mid-session.”

Blusher’s metaphorical teen rom-com of a band, all three members are the leads. They share vocals on many of their songs and swap instruments during the live shows.

They all produce and write together, utilising their individual experiences cutting their teeth as solo artists before forming the band.

Since Blusher launched into action at BIGSOUND in 2022, the trio are on track to become a staple amongst the Australian pop landscape, and have made strides in the UK after recently showcasing at The Great Escape.

Having already supported Aurora on her ANZ headline tour, and soon to be joining Swedish pop powerhouse, Tove Lo, Blusher have proven they are at their very best on stage – a fresh breath of colourful, pop goodness.

To celebrate to the release of Should We Go Dance? as well as their latest single Limelight, we caught up with Lauren, Miranda and Jade of Blusher to find out everything you need to know about the trio.

Give us the story behind your name?

Lauren: It was actually a song title of one of the first songs we ever wrote together! We loved the idea of a “blusher” being the kind of person who can’t help but wear their emotions - their affection, their anger, their excitement - on their cheeks.

If your music was a flavour, what would it taste like?

Lauren: Sweet and sour - or maybe like, that chocolate that has popping candy in it.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they impacted your own sound and style?

Miranda: We’re inspired by so many pop icons - Kesha, Charli XCX, Robyn etc. We also love bands like MGMT, LCD Soundsystem and The Killers, and a lot of dance music, house and hyperpop.

Our influences are what we bonded over in the beginning, it’s so rare to find two other people who you share so many references with.

What’s been the biggest moment in your careers so far?

Jade: Our first support tour with Aurora was unlike anything we’d done before. To go from playing to 100 people to 2000 people was truly insane - and with one of our idols! Still feels like a dream.

What's the most unusual or unexpected source of inspiration you've drawn from when writing a song?

Miranda: Our first single Softly Spoken was inspired by a French artist Sophie Calle and her exhibit Dumped by Email. We don’t know a whole lot about french modern art, but it was so inspiring, we couldn’t help but talk about it - check it out!

Can you share a hilarious or cringe-worthy moment from your early days as a band?

Lauren: On the first day of our first international tour one of us accidentally tried to smuggle a mango into New Zealand and blew the tour budget on a bio-infringement fine.

We weren’t off to a great start, Lord bless beautiful New Zealand and its mango laws.

What are the top three tracks or artists are you guys vibing on rn?

Jade: Lately we’ve been talking about Grimes, Bo Burnham and the song G.U.Y by Lady Gaga. Grimes is a big production reference for us - old stuff like Oblivion, and anything off the Art Angels album. Bo Burnham is the lyricist of our generation, obviously.

What’s something that fans might not know about y’all?

Lauren: We started the band as a joke! Well, kind of... We were all writing as solo artists for years before meeting each other, and when Blusher began we thought it would be a fun side project for us to channel our angsty, high-energy pop instincts into - we’re so happy that it eventually became our whole lives.

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your lives, which would it be and why?

Jade: Arrival by Abba. We’ll never move on from Abba - they have everything we are looking for in music.

What's in the works for y’all in 2023?

Lauren: We’re really leaning into a dancey direction in our music and our lives. Our EP Should We Go Dance? is out now and we’re following it up by supporting icon Tove Lo on her tour. We can’t wait!

We recently went on a writing trip to LA and London, so we have a lot of new songs that we’re working on in the studio at the moment. We‘re just so keen to play more shows and release more music.
