More WAAX More WAAX

WAAX said goodbye to their devoted fans with the “Parting Gift” farewell show in June and announced they’d be going on an indefinite hiatus.

Vocalist Maz De Vita wrote back in April, “This is the most fucked up thing I’ve ever had to write because I never thought it possible: WAAX as you know it is going on hiatus. All I ever wanted was to play gigs and make records - who knew shit could get so complicated.

“To those who have supported us through the rollercoaster we give you this parting gift as an offering of thanks and love. I love you all more than you know, for real, you’re the reason we did any of this and kept hanging on. I will be back one day stronger than ever.”

And today, the Labrador singer revealed that she is back, and WAAX is officially her solo music outlet. Taking to Instagram this afternoon (1 November), De Vita showed the “gift” she teased earlier this week: “It’s my birthday, I have a gift for you in a couple days,” she wrote on Monday.

Announcing three dates for her upcoming Eternal Angel Australian tour – including headline shows at The Night Cat in Melbourne (15 December), Crowbar in Sydney (22 December), and an appearance at Best Night Ever Festival on the Gold Coast (30 December), De Vita has written an open letter to fans about where WAAX currently stands.

De Vita began, “I’ve been thinking of a million and one ways to say this but I have decided to continue after what has been an ~eventful~ year. The WAAX community is who I am, and sometimes you need to take things away to get some perspective.

“Although we hold a lot of love, the boys are no longer continuing with me - life happens, being in a band is hard. But the more I thought about it, this project has always been an evolution of my songwriting and it felt weird to walk away.

“So here it is, the new WAAX era… I have heard your prayers and am doing 2 shows in melb and Syd and @bestnighteverau on the GC. After that I’m heading to LA to continue writing the next chapter. I look forward to seeing you all.”

Best Night Ever is ending 2023 in style at the Miami Marketta on the Gold Coast, headlined by Dune Rats and starring The Smith Street Band, Bad//Dreems, Pist Idiots, Press Club and more.

Eleven bands, two stages, and no clashes. Tickets are available from Monday, 6 November, at 10 am AEST. You can buy tickets here.
