Machine Gun Kelly. You love him or you hate him. It's a pretty divided world out there on ol' MGK. Whatever your take, he has had a modicum of success in two genres of the music scene. Today he's stated that after two rock records, he's jumping out of that world for now. Good thing? or bad thing?
Machine Gun Kelly, the music scene's most divided opinion figure, has today said that he is going back to rap music - for now. Regardless of your opinion on him, there is a great deal that he did for rock music in the past couple of years in terms of making sure that guitar music has stayed in the larger, mainstream/commercial world, ensuring that it's heard by many millions more than most new heavy/alt/rock releases. There is the artistic side of the argument that argues that it's fairly naff pop-punk that he has put out, but there is definite gold among what he has put out. The less said about his more-than-cringey relationship with Megan Fox the better, but here's what he said, below.
MGK made this statement, essentially saying that he doesn't think a third rock record in a row will be as successful and it won't "be exciting unless it's missed". And frankly, he kind of has a point.
How many times have you had the realisation about an artist's work or catalog being really good when your mate says "I just wish XYZ artist would get back to making *insert old style of music they used to make*" - and you all go "OHHHH YEAHH THAT'D BE SICK". It's the old 'you gotta let me miss you for me to want you'.
"I'm going to make a rap album for myself. For no other reason, no point to prove, no chip on my shoulder… If I keep doing things to prove things to people, I'm going to, one, drive myself crazy and, two, not make a good product. I made Tickets and Mainstream Sellout because I wanted to make them. I need to now also make people miss that sound because Tickets and Mainstream Sellout are companion albums, I don't think making a third that's so [similar to those] is going to be exciting unless it's missed."
