"Threads’ is about the fear of letting a relationship consume me."
Lorde's younger sister, Indy Yelich has released her debut single Threads.
On her self-assured debut release, the singer-songwriter and poet invite us into her world for the very first time. Produced by Josh Grant, Threads displays Indy's intuitive songwriting and captures the euphoria and dizzying mess of love and life in your early 20s.
Speaking about the creation and artistic intention of Threads, Indy shares
“‘Threads’ is about the fear of letting a relationship consume me. I wrote this song when I was going through a very on-off relationship for years. When I think of this song I think of a passionate argument, miscommunication, the excitement of New York City night life. A toxic, messy love affair. Flashbacks of the moments shared together vs being out surrounded by friends, always caught in between. This song is so special to me as it depicts what being in love at 23 feels like; chaotic, hopeful, passionate”.
Growing up in the sleepy Auckland suburb of Devonport, Indy recalls losing interest in drama classes as a child because she was “always more interested in creating the storyline than being in someone else’s”.
This quickly became something of a mantra to Indy, motivating her first to pursue poetry and then songwriting - then to uproot her life to LA at 18 before settling in New York shortly after - all whilst proudly observing the ascent of her older sister Ella (AKA, Lorde).
As inspired by writers like Ocean Vuong, Frank O’Hara and Alex Dimitrov as she is Bon Iver, Kacey Musgraves and Tears for Fears, Indy acquits herself as an evocative lyricist. Bringing a poet’s perspective to songwriting and music, Indy fosters a powerful sense of universality whilst tracing her own journey. As Indy explains, “I've always had a very distinct voice but now, at 23, I finally feel I know exactly what I’m trying to say.”
Threads arrives accompanied by an official visualizer which you can stream below.
