The Veronicas have officially started the campaign for their new album, Gothic Summer, with the new single Perfect. Does it live up to its title? Pretty much, yes.
Bright electric guitars and punchy drums highlight twins Jess and Lisa Origliasso’s, ahem, perfect vocals throughout the energetic pop-punk verses and chorus, while a theatrical time change at the bridge builds towards an even bigger chorus.
Perfect is an anthem celebrating individuality and dispelling notions towards unattainable ideas of perfection, particularly for women. In the chorus, the sisters sing: “No one makes it out alive/ There’s no point in your pretty lies/ Fuck designer, start a riot – Perfect’s going outta style”. Check out the music video below.
The Veronicas announced the release of Gothic Summer earlier this week by sharing the dramatic album art on social media.
Depicting the two sisters lying underneath a blue Chevrolet with their legs on the road, Gothic Summer also has a Parental Advisory: Explicit Content sticker plastered on the front. You can pre-save Gothic Summer here. The album is due for release in early 2024 via Big Noise.
Perfect was created alongside pop-punk masterminds, including John Feldmann (Blink-182, Avril Lavigne, Yungblud) and co-producer Ryan Linville (Olivia Rodrigo). Adding more excitement to the mix, Blink-182’s Travis Barker happened to be in the neighbourhood and jumped on the drums for the track.

Jess and Lisa said about their new single, “Perfect is a love letter to our younger and current selves. Perfection has a different meaning for everyone. Social media has changed how we interact with the world. Perception versus reality is rewarded and condemned.
“From what people wear to who they date. It's like a magnifying glass. We just want to remind everyone to empower themselves and free their minds. We all die in the end; we have to live with and love ourselves fiercely, first and foremost. On our deathbed, the only opinion that will matter on how you've lived will be your own.”
Jon Cohan, President of LA-based label Big Noise – home to acts such as The Used and Goldfinger – added, “We couldn’t be more excited to begin this new era of The Veronicas with ‘Perfect’! The song is absolutely incredible and will certainly set the tone for the months to come and, of course, for the new album.”
