Liam Gallagher Suggests Oasis Could Reform Without Him ‘Like Queen’

Another day, another rumour about Oasis finally reuniting. There have been thousands by this point, with some coming painfully close to seeming legitimate, and a solid handful even being spread by the Gallagher brothers themselves – but alas, the rumour mill continues to churn out baseless “reports” that never wind up coming true.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped the hordes of Oasis Reunion Truthers from latching on to this latest batch of rumours, stemming from an article claiming the band had stadium dates booked in for later this year.

Over the weekend, The Mirror published a report “revealing” that Liam and Noel Gallagher had “secretly” booked three dates at Wembley Stadium in London – Monday July 8, Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 – which would mark their first performances together since August 2009 (when Oasis infamously split amid the brothers’ longstanding feud).

The report goes on to note that although the Gallaghers had their trio of dates locked in, they ultimately scrapped their Oasis reunion plans. An anonymous source told the paper: “An Oasis reunion has been hoped for for years. This year would have been the big moment, 30 years on from their debut album Definitely Maybe.”

The source said this booking marked the closest Liam and Noel had ever come to squashing their beef – “it doesn’t get much closer than booking Wembley” – and noted that both of their respective teams “were devastated when it all collapsed yet again”. There’s still hope for the future, though, as they added: “The fact they made it to that point shows there’s a will on both sides. The hope is it will be a case of not if, but when.”

After the report made waves online, fans naturally took to social media for answers, pestering both Gallagher brothers for verification. Noel has stayed silent on the matter, but Liam has played into the hype for laughs (as he is wont to do). When one fan asked him if the Wembley dates were indeed legitimate, for example, he quipped in reply, “I don’t do three gigs in a row.”

A few tweets later, after describing Noel as “a clean living hot dog”, Liam said bluntly that he was unaware of any reunion plans to begin with, joking that Noel and co. may be planning to swap him out for another singer, akin to the way Queen now tour with Adam Lambert in place of Freddie Mercury. He wrote: “Nobody’s told me[.] Maybe [they’re] getting a new singer like the dude [from] Queen.”

Thus raised the inevitable question – if Oasis were to reunite without Liam Gallagher, who would step in to fill his role? Liam wasted no time in putting forward his own pick: Ian ‘H’ Watkins from the dance-pop group Steps.

Meanwhile, back in February, Liam put the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame on blast – labelling the awards “bollocks” and “very fishy” – after Oasis received their first-ever nomination. While most artists would be enamoured by such an accolade, Liam made his thoughts on the title very clear: “I don’t need some wank award by some geriatric in a cowboy hat.”

In 2022, Liam stated his interest in an Oasis reunion, and admitted he regretted their initial split in 2009. He said in an interview, “I'd love Oasis to get back together. If it happens, it happens. We should never have split up, but we did, and this is where we're at.”

Liam is currently touring in support of his eponymous collab album with John Squire (which arrived back in March), while Noel is still riding high on the tail of Council Skies – his fourth album with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, which he released last June.
