L7 are rock music icons.
Donita Sparks (guitar/vocals), Suzi Gardner (guitar/vocals), Jennifer Finch (bass) and Demetra Plakas (drums) took over the music world in a grunge-dominated landscape with their punk rock “take no shit” attitude, which was on full display when the group released their seminal third LP, 1992’s Bricks Are Heavy.
Australian fans will get to celebrate the record in its entirety, as well as other hits, this December - get ready to rock out to Pretend We’re Dead, Shitlist, Wargasm, Everglade, and Slide. After a show at Auckland’s Powerstation, L7’s Australian tour will commence in Sydney, followed by Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne.
In 1988, the Los Angeles-based group were signed to Epitaph, owned by Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz. From there, their second album, Smell The Magic, came through Sub Pop. For Bricks Are Heavy, L7 signed with Slash, knowing that the label had international distribution beyond the US and Europe and could introduce the band to Asia and Australia.
Bricks Are Heavy was produced by Nevermind producer Butch Vig and catapulted the band into the mainstream with the timeless Pretend We’re Dead – originally written by Sparks as a break-up song but becoming an anthem for the generation of alternative rock music lovers.
L7 last hit Australia in October 2016 with Cosmic Psychos in tow. The Covid-19 pandemic halted plans for a May 2020 tour - it’s been a long time coming, so snap up those tickets quickly.
The pre-sale begins tomorrow, Friday, 14 April, at 10 am local time. General admission tickets go on sale on Monday, 17 April, at 10 am local time.
In a 2016 interview with The Music, Sparks reflected on the feminism that came out of the grunge music movement. "I actually think that it's one of the overlooked legacies of the grunge era, how many women were playing and how for a brief moment, it kind of killed misogyny for a little while in rock'n'roll,” she said.
