Aussie blues and folk rock icon Kim Churchill has some exciting news to share: his 2014 smash hit, Window To The Sky, has gone Platinum.
In a luminous photo posted to social media, Churchill is posing with a cheerful glow holding the new plaque. "I'm really proud," he wrote. "I know these things don't offer much in the way of true long term happiness and it's important not to attach your sense of self to them - but sometimes, like a friendly dog running up to you at the beach, it's nice to have a moment".
Window To The Sky, from his 2014 album Silence / Win, is a folk-pop offering, but with Churchill's tone washing through, the song becomes otherworldly - it certainly doesn't feel like a song from our time. It's his most-played track on Spotify, with almost 18 million streams; it's followed by the hits Second Hand Car (12.5 million plays), After The Sun (over 3 million streams), and See You Soon, with 1.8 million plays.
"I think that you know, when a song does something like Window To The Sky did, or what any single/hit/whatever you want to call it has, it's a life of its own, it's its own little micro-environment, and there are so many variables that will never happen again and are totally enigmatic, so there's no point trying to sit down and construct that," Churchill told The Music upon preparing to release his fifth album, Weight Falls.
He added, "It just happens if you're lucky and if the stars align. But it took me a while to [realise that], and that's why this album took me so long because it was just kind of getting over trying to top that. Or trying to build some idea in my head that Window To The Sky was somehow better than a lot of other stuff that I've done, and it's not, really. Like, I didn't even think it was the best song on the album; it just got picked up."
Congratulations to Kim and the team!
