More Karnivool More Karnivool

Fans of the Australian progressive metal band Karnivool have been rewarded for their patience, with the rockers officially announcing their first album in twelve years.

In Verses will be released on Friday, 6 February, via Cymatic Records / Sony Music. The follow-up to 2013’s Asymmetry, the record contains the groovy new single Aozora, the already released Drone and a reworked version of All It Takes.

Announcing the album on Instagram yesterday (16 September), the band wrote: “Friends, the wait is over. 10 plus years in the making, our 4th studio album ‘In Verses’ will officially be yours February 6.

“Here is another taste of the record, Aozora. A song that we have loved playing live in its final form. Thank you for your patience. Pre-order ‘In Verses’ now.”

Vocalist Ian Kenny said about Aozora—which you can listen to below— “The whole theme for that song is escaping or waiting to escape. Trying to find a way to escape yourself. The idea of finding freedom in the blue. Trying to find freedom amongst the complications of just being human. We’re so weird, you know? Trying to understand that at different times along the road, sometimes you end up with more questions than answers.”

Back in June, Karnivool dropped the single Drone, their first new song in four years. At the time, they commented that Drone was only the beginning and had been lifted from an upcoming “larger body of work.”

The release of Drone followed the band’s Australian tour announcement a month beforehand, in which the band revealed they’d been in a Perth studio with producer Forrester Savell for “the better part of five months.”

Throughout the tour, Karnivool have showcased “new material, road-tested for the first time,” while older songs have been “bent into new shapes.” The tour allowed Australian fans to “get a taste of the next chapter of Karnivool before the rest of the world.”

Kenny said of the tour and the band’s new music, “We can’t bloody wait to get out there and share what’s been brewing in the Karnivool riff pot, and show folks what they have to look forward to.”

The band’s Australian tour concludes next month, with sold-out shows in Perth and Canberra, plus shows in Sydney, Rockhampton, Mackay, and Townsville, wrapping up the trek across Australia in Cairns for Be Social Fest. You can find more touring details here.
