Justice Detail Hotly Awaited LP 'Hyperdrama', Drop Collab With Tame Impala

Justice are back. After teasing a comeback earlier this month, landing on the 2024 Coachella line-up and The Weeknd recently hinting at a collaboration, the French electronic duo have announced their new album, Hyperdrama, and released two singles.

EDM.com recently reported that last year, the founder of record label Ed Banger, Pedro Winter, confirmed that the duo were preparing to release a new album and tour this year.

“Now it’s official,” Winter said. “I can tell you now. There will be a new album and a new tour in 2024.”

One song features Tame Impala and the other is a solo Justice instant classic, Generator. The former, One Night/All Night, is a groovy, beat-filled number that acts to welcome back Justice and features Kevin Parker’s chill, inimitable vocal.

Now that both singles are out, Generator was revealed to be the snippet Justice shared on social media in early January.

While One Night/All Night is consumed by funk, Generator is the opposite: its industrial, almost hardstyle techno to keep you awake, ahem, all night. With little keyboard and bass breaks between the intensity of the beats, Generator fights to retain listeners’ attention with a brutal breakdown hitting less than halfway through the song.

Hyperdrama will be released on Friday, 26 April, via Ed Banger Records / Because Music / Virgin Music Group. Justice’s first album in eight years will be available on CD, double black vinyl, and limited-edition double crystal-clear vinyl. You can pre-order/pre-save your copy here.

On working with Tame Impala, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay commented in a press release, “We wanted this track to sound as if a dark/techno iteration of Justice had found a sample of a disco iteration of Kevin Parker. Kevin has a sense of melody that’s fascinating in the sense that he manages to write melodies that feel both simple and natural but very peculiar at the same time.

“This song oscillates between pure electronic music and pure disco, but you never really get the two at the same time. This very idea of switching instantly from a genre to another within a song runs through the whole record, and is maybe showcased the clearest in One Night/All Night.”

On Generator, the duo added, “To us, this one sounds like Getaway by the Salsoul Orchestra, but with gabber and classic 90s hardcore techno sounds. Disco/funk and electronic music at large have always been core elements of the music we make as Justice.

“In Hyperdrama, we make them coexist, but not in a peaceful way. We like this idea of making them fight a bit for attention.”
