The UK-bred troubadour will be spend a bit of time in the sun at the turn of the year
British folk singer-songwriter John Smith is hauling himself Down Under at last, with the celebrated troubadour set to grace the Woodford and Cygnet folk festivals as well as a handful of dates beyond for his maiden voyage to the country at the end of next month.
Kicking off at Woodford on December 27-January 1, Smith will take in three headline east-coast performances — Brisbane's Junk Bar on January 3, the Melbourne Folk Club on January 7, and Sydney's Django Bar on January 8 — before bookending his trip with a jaunt to Tasmania to round out his trip at Cygnet from January 9-11.
Smith's arrival comes in the wake of his recently released, widely acclaimed full-length Great Lakes. The album has been something of a world-beating catalyst for the admired musician, having toured North America, Europe and now Australia in the past 12 months, including putting in his biggest headline effort to date in front of 2000 punters at Shepherd's Bush Empire, in London. Add to that his existing status as an alumnus of major festivals such as Glastonbury, Green Man, and the Cambridge and Edmonton folk festivals, as well as previous stints supporting the likes of Iron & Wine, Ben Howard, David Gray, Gil Scott-Heron, Chris Thile and John Martyn, and it's safe to say Aussie audiences are in for a performance of undeniable calibre come the end of the year.
