Hoodoo Gurus Announce 2024 ‘Back To The Stoneage’ Tour

Hoodoo Gurus have announced a 12-date national tour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their legendary debut album, Stoneage Romeos.

The festivities will begin in Thirroul on Thursday November 14, when Dave Faulkner and his fellow misfits take over Anita’s Theatre. They’ll head to Newcastle next, wreaking havoc at the Civic Theatre the following night (November 15), before rounding out the weekend with a show at the Entertainment Grounds in Gosford the night after that (November 16).

From there, Hoodoo Gurus will head south to play Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Friday November 22, then the Hindley Street Music Hall in Adelaide on Saturday November 24. After rolling through Canberra for a show at Llewellyn Hall the following Thursday (November 28), the band will return to NSW for gigs at the Sydney Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill and the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, respectively locked in for Friday November 29 and Saturday 30.

The tour will come to an end in Perth on Friday December 13 – when Hoodoo Gurus play the Astor Theatre – but not before they leave their mark on Queensland with a trio of back-to-back shows across the weekend prior: Friday December 6 at The Station on the Sunshine Coast, then Saturday 7 at the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane, and Sunday 8 at Miami Marketta on the Gold Coast.

All 12 shows will see Hoodoo Gurus perform Stoneage Romeos in its entirety, as well as all the hits from their other nine incredible albums. Tickets go on sale at 10am local time next Friday (May 17), following presales that kick off at the same time next Wednesday (May 15) – head here for all the info you’ll need on ticket sales.

Along the trek, Hoodoo Gurus will be joined by some of their most renowned peers: Tumbleweed will open up the shows in Thirroul and Sydney, while Dallas Crane will handle supporting duties in Newcastle, Melbourne and Adelaide, Spy v Spy will fill the role in Canberra and Rooty Hill, and Screamfeeder will warm crowds up at the trio of Queensland dates. Rinehearts will open for the band in Perth, and in Gosford, they’ll be joined by GANGgajang and Allniters in addition to Spy v Spy.

In a press release shared today (May 10), Faulkner said of the celebratory tour: “Stoneage Romeos was a pivotal album for us and many of its songs have remained live favourites ever since. It’ll be great to play some of those ‘less-travelled’ songs from it on this tour – even though that means we’ll be playing longer sets to fit everything else in as well. Hah! To my mind that’s a win-win situation.”

Today’s tour announcement comes after Hoodoo Gurus announced a deluxe reissue of Stoneage Romeos on vinyl, which in addition to the full original album includes their 1984 Live At The Chevron concert recording, a seven-inch record featuring the axed second part of the track Hayride To Hell (dubbed The Showdown), an A2 poster and an exclusive postcard. Stoneage Romeos was initially released in March of 1984, sporting the timeless singles Leilani, Tojo, My Girl and I Want You Back. It was an immediate hit for Hoodoo Gurus, earning widespread critical acclaim and winning Best Debut Album at the 1984 Countdown Awards.

Reviewing a Hoodoo Gurus show in 2022, Mick Radojkovic wrote for TheMusic.com.au: “Despite the decades past, the fitness of the whole band was evident. Brad Shepherd, in between ripping out killer guitar solos, was doing air-splits and solid rock poses during the high-energy performance. You wouldn’t have known that Nik Rieth hadn’t been on drums since the start. He nailed the fills, matching the airdrums of the crowd and was a more than excellent replacement for long-time drummer, Mark Kingsmill. Richard Grossman was a rock on the bass, driving the band expertly, with a swagger and a grin.”
