Scope of project revealed along with first taste.
Coming off a recent win at the Music Victoria Awards (nabbing one for Best Producer), Joelistics, aka Joel Ma, has revealed his next musical installment will be a concept album combined with a short film.
Titled Film School, it's a departure from what you'd normally expect of him as it's described as a project of music and film - an album of beats and synths, ‘70s Asian pop samples, psych-rock journey music and studio improvisations and a short film incorporating dance and animation.
The first reveal of the project is the psychedelic single Yokai. “With the track, I wanted to weave an eerie feeling built from loops, reminiscent of empty streets, a distant sense of dread and the hypnotic patterns of lockdown life. With the clip I wanted the dancers to personify our collective fear of sickness and loneliness and how those fears dance at the edge of every moment we hold dear,” Joelistics says of the song.
You can check out the video for Yokai below, although for the complete scope of the Film School project, you'll have to wait until the album's 2021 release.
