Hiatus Kaiyote Announce One-Off Melbourne Show With The Dreamboat Orchestra

In February 2024, genre-bending Aussie favourites Hiatus Kaiyote will put on an ultra-special show for their hometown, announcing a one-off gig at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall with The Dreamboat Orchestra.

Following successful concerts with orchestras at the Sydney Opera House and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, it’s Melbourne’s turn to experience Hiatus Kaiyote in a way punters have never witnessed before.

Taking the beautiful Hamer Hall stage on Friday, 23 February, the band will be joined by The Dreamboat Orchestra, with orchestral arrangements by Miguel Atwood Ferguson, the composer who wrote the cult-classic J Dilla score Suite For Ma Dukes, and the arrangements of Brazilian legend Arthur Verocai.

“After orchestra shows at Hollywood Bowl and Sydney Opera House, we're thrilled to bring them to our hometown,” Hiatus Kaiyote said in a press release. “It will be a dream to perform these stunning arrangements in the Hamer Hall; we can't wait to share this experience with you.”

Hiatus Kaiyote - made up of singer-guitarist Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield, bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin and drummer Perrin Moss - gained international recognition with the release of their debut album, Tawk Tomahawk, in 2012. In 2015, they released their second album, Choose Your Weapon, which further solidified their reputation and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance. 

Fan favourite single Nakamarra, the band’s collaboration with rapper Q-Tip, also landed them a Grammy Nomination for Best R&B Performance (the first-ever such nod for an Australian act), as did Breathing Underwater, from their aforementioned second album, Choose Your Weapon. 

In 2021, Hiatus Kaiyote dropped their first album in over five years, Mood Valiant, which took the Aussie outfit across the globe.

Witnessing the band in action in December 2021, The Music reviewer Mick Radojkovic commented about their set, “With Hiatus Kaiyote representing Australian music here and abroad, everything really will be okay.”
