Grimes Says She’s Not A Nazi, Just ‘Proud Of White Culture’

Grimes has hit back at commenters branding her a “Nazi” over her recent conduct on social media, excusing her beliefs as merely being “proud of white culture”.

In a seemingly unprompted post shared on New Year’s Day, the artist – real name Claire Boucher – took to Twitter to lament her political critics. “I'm called a Nazi because I happily am proud of white culture,” she wrote. “But every day I think fondly of the brown king Cyrus the Great who invented the first ever empire, and the Japanese icon Murasaki Shikibu who wrote the first novel ever. What if humans just loved each other? History teaches us that we have all been, and always will be, great.”

Boucher went on to argue with some of the detractors in her replies; when one accused her of being “a white supremacist”, she replied saying she’s “a human suprematist” and “humans are amazing”.

Another commenter made the noteworthy point that “if somebody calls you a Nazi for admiring Mozart and Archimedes, [they’re] a dumbass”, but “if someone gets worried about the phrase ‘white culture’ that’s not necessarily unreasonable”. In response, Boucher expounded on her views: “Tolkien lamented the damage Nazis did to the melting pot that is ‘white culture’ and as a European mutt, I firmly agree with him. My complaint is the western ignorance of everything else, such as [Kublai Khan’s popularisation] of paper money and mechanics.”

When one commenter asked her to delete her Tweet, Boucher flatly stated, “I don’t care. I will ride always for the beauty and ingenuity of all humans. It is only those who refuse to look at history who think anyone superior or inferior and I will happily die on this hill.”

Boucher continued to argue her right to spout such opinions – writing to one user that “everyone who wants to join in to contribute should be allowed” – and further engaged with those pointing out the various atrocities linked to the establishment and widespread celebration of “white culture”. One commenter posed to her, “If I got this right, you're not only able to [conceptualise] white culture without referencing all sorts of violence that are historically related to it, but are also proud of it?”

Replying directly to this, Boucher wrote: “All cultures participated in horrible things and the [industrialisation] of slavery is arguably the worst of all, and arguably the cause of decline of all empires before this one. That doesn't mean there are great humans among us in the past and now. What do [you] say [about] the African slave trade of Slavs? It's racist to pretend whites have always been in power. All humans have contributed to our worst and best.”

Boucher’s latest controversy ostensibly stems from her having previously engaged with neo-Nazi content creators on Twitter – as detailed on a Reddit forum devoted to Grimes, she’s alleged to have ‘liked’ a racist meme on Twitter last April.
