More Foo Fighters More Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl once again proved he’s the nicest guy in rock’n’roll after he was spotted serving meals to the less fortunate at Federation Square in Melbourne on Friday morning (Nov. 8).m.

The surprise visit occurred as the Foo Fighters wrapped up two energetic performances in Melbourne and prepared for their upcoming show in Sydney on Saturday, with their Australian tour concluding in Brisbane on December 12.

Despite having a flight to catch to join his bandmates in Sydney, Grohl worked a huge 18-hour shift alongside volunteers at The Big Umbrella Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by Justin Dickinson in 2010 for the charity’s weekly Feed Melbourne program at MG’s Kitchen — named after the late Michael Gudinski.

Posting about the star’s act of generosity on Facebook, The Big Umbrella wrote: “Wow! What a day. Our friends on the street were treated to an epic American-style BBQ with all the trimmings prepared by rock legend Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters.”

“The vibe was at an all-time high at Fed Square for this very special one-off lunch feast. It will be a day 'our friends on the streets' will never forget as they brushed up against a rock legend and one of the nicest guys on the planet who genuinely cares for people in need. No words can fully capture the impact of this positive experience.”

They continued, “Dave and his mates including Jules and Nathan from Nat's What I Reckon, Nick from Carolina Smoke and our wonderful neighbours Andrew and Pam from @TheQueClub spent 18 hours preparing and lovingly smoking 120kgs of pork ribs, pork butt and beef brisket before delivering it to #mgskitchen the next morning.”

“Dave, Nick and Nat served tirelessly in the sweltering heat for over 2 hours feeding 430 meals, posing for photos, signing whatever people found from cardboard plates and t-shirts whilst also being so humble when people had no idea who they were.”

They went on to thank Dave and his fellow volunteers for their generosity.

“With all our heart thank you Dave. Thank you Jules, Nathan (Nat) Hoodie, and Nick, thank you Frontier and a massive thank you Andrew and Pam and our incredible volunteer team for literally serving up our best Big Umbrella meal and experience ever!”

Aside from feeding the needy, Grohl has been taking Australia by storm as the Foo Fighters tour the country, with The Music reviewer Mick Radojkovic describing the frontman’s energy at their Melbourne show as “nearly three hours of non-stop stage presence”.

“Whether it's your 12th time seeing them or your first (of which it was later revealed there were plenty), the anticipation of Grohl taking to the stage is palpable, and he doesn't do anything quietly; he bolts onto the stage first and later would be the last to leave. Nearly three hours of non-stop stage presence. That’s no mean feat.”

Foo Fighters will officially wrap up their Australian tour on December 12 at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.
