Western Australia's Falls-with-a-twist is getting even bigger
Falls Festival's intriguing West Australian urban experiment, Falls Downtown, has become an even more alluring prospect with the announcement of a handful of additional artists joining the main-stage bill alongside a laundry list of bar-raising attractions and activities.
Stepping up to the big leagues at Fremantle Town Square's artist performance areas will be fly-in drawcard Kari Faux, an Arkansas-based rapper who has been disarming audiences and critics around the globe of late while casually earning props from some impressive contemporaries including Wiz Khalifa, Janelle Monae and Childish Gambino, who will also appear at Falls.
Also joining the roster are Perth-bred five-piece Mt Mountain, who hit the festival in the wake of their well-received debut full-length, Cosmos Terros, as well as ascendant Fremantle local Elli Schoen.
Along with those artist additions, Falls Downtown organisers will welcome the Danceteria, fleshed out by the ever-trusty Pilerats DJs, isolation-born independent collective The Community, the party-hearty philosophy of Fungle Club, local-scene champions Boogie Nights Media, techno/house party-starters Polyrhythmic, and there will also be the Deep Vibe Spa, courtesy of celebrated local fest Camp Doogs, which provides punters a chance to "take a Big Dip in … an underwater temple of sound, vision and texture". Sounds fucked up; we're super into it already.

Meanwhile, the Old-time Music Hall will ring out with the boogie-box sounds of Blind Tiger with Jimmy Mac, the dazzling vintage swing of Cottontail Trio and complementary jazz of The Supper Club. Plus, 20th-century throwback tunes aplenty from Manhattan Hot Swing, delicious vocal harmonies from Stoney Joe, and a date with Luke Dux & Atomic Lunchbox.
To round it out, the laughs will spill out of split sides everywhere at the Church Of Heavenly Delights, featuring appearances from renowned comedians including Joel Creasey, Andy Saunders (MC), The Stevenson Experience, Aunty Donna, Ivan Aristiguieta (MC), The Big Hoo Haa improv and a bunch of other great comedy events, including Bull$*!# Trivia, Local Laughs and The Tor-night Show, with Tor Snyder.
All of this and so much more joins an existing smorgasbord of unmissable talent including Childish Gambino, London Grammar, The Avalanches, Violent Soho, Matt Corby, Ta-ku, The Jezabels, Ball Park Music, Grouplove and a wealth of other drawcards and attractions, all headed to Fremantle over 7-8 January 2017.
