Elton John, Ed Sheeran, 'Weird Al' Yankovic Amongst Emmy Award Nominees In Music Categories

Elton John, Ed Sheeran and “Weird Al” Yankovic are some of the music category nominees at this year’s Emmy Awards.

If John wins his for Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium on Disney+ in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category, he will become the 19th ever EGOT winner (winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award).

Yankovic’s Now You Know (from his Daniel Radcliffe-led biopic, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) is in the music and lyrics category, as is Ed Sheeran’s A Beautiful Game, co-written by Max Martin and Foy Vance and featured in Ted Lasso.

In the Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety Series Or Special category, the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert held at London’s Wembley Stadium has also received a nod. The show starred Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, AC/DC vocalist, Brian Johnson, Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme, and many more.

As Spin reports, Danny Elfman received two Emmy nominations for his work on Wednesday, as has Howard Shore for The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power. You can find all the 2023 Emmy Awards nominees here.

The 2023 Emmy Awards are set to take place on the 9th and 10th of September, with the ongoing Writer’s Guild of America strike potentially affecting those dates.

Elton John officially wrapped up touring over the weekend, with his five-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour finally coming to an end. The I’m Still Standing singer might make the rare appearance on stage in the future – think charity or tribute concert or award show – but he’s done with the ordeal of world tours.

His final show on the tour occurred at Tele2 Arena, Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday night (8 July). 

Addressing the 45,000 fans in the arena, John thanked them for their decades of support across his career. “I’ve had the most wonderful career… beyond belief,” John said, per NME. “Fifty years of pure joy playing music… how lucky am I? I wouldn’t be sitting here… if it wasn’t for you.

“You bought the singles, the CDs, the albums, the cassettes… [and] more importantly, you bought the tickets to the shows. You know how much I love to play live. It’s been my lifeblood to play for you guys. You’ve been absolutely magnificent.” 

As of 18 June, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour is a touring artist's most successful run, grossing $910.4 million, per a new Billboard Boxscore report.
