Ed Sheeran has a grave for himself in his backyard, ready to go for when he passes away.

Situated underneath a chapel Sheeran has built on his $7.8 million AUD Suffolk estate, the Shape Of You singer revealed that his plans for his passing revolve around his loved ones who passed away. Most people he knew who had passed away were cremated, so he didn’t feel he appropriately mourned them without a burial ceremony.

Discussing the slightly morbid, bizarre topic in a new GQ Magazine interview, Sheeran insisted that the grave isn’t a crypt like some reporters have suggested (“I wouldn’t say it’s a crypt”) but that it’s “a hole that’s dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes, and I pass away, I get to go in there.”

The chapel on his property is a site where his friends have married, and Sheeran finds it so beautiful that he wants to be buried there.

He continued, “People think it’s really weird and really morbid, but I’ve had friends die without wills, and no one knows what to do.” Makes sense when you think about it.

On 29 September, Ed Sheeran released his new album, Autumn Variations, an album without any singles or music videos to promote it.

“Each record before I’ve done all the big going in and doing all these radio interviews, and going on the late-night shows, and doing all this stuff,” Sheeran said on CBS Mornings on the day Autumn Variations was released.

Sheeran added that a big reason behind the move was to lift pressure off his shoulders to constantly outperform his previous albums. “Everything has to be the biggest and best every time and then better the next time,” he said.

That’s why going independent has removed some of the pressure he often faces. “There are no expectations because there’s no company. You have to live with it. You have to be like, ‘I don’t care what people think.’”

Sheeran announced that he’d be releasing Autumn Variations ten days after The Sun reported that the Shape Of You hitmaker had a new album completed and was readying it for a September release.
