"We are wishing for a little bit of sugary escapism, to get us through some sticky times."
Melbourne indie pop darlings Dorsal Fins have burst back onto the scene after five years away from the limelight.
Returning as a tightly-knit three-piece, the band have hit the sweet spot with a brand new single, Sugar. The funk-laden sun soaked tune and accompanying video is a little bit of escapism for the group. According to vocalist Ella Thompson, "we came up with the initial idea for the Sugar video with the delightful Izzie Austin during a car ride back from Heathcote, Victoria where Izzie had freshly taken our picture at the man-made Pink Cliffs there."
She continued, "Izzie meticulously brought the ideas together with ease and so much fun. The opening lyric of Sugar ‘Alexa tell me the news today’ sets the scene where we are wishing for a little bit of sugary escapism, to get us through some sticky times. The puppet who plays Alexa was made by Melbourne illustrator, Eleanor James. Her characters are whimsical & free, giving the once robotic object of amazon's all-seeing doll 'Alexa' come to hand-crafted life."
Thompson added on the thematic elements in Sugar, "In a time where surveillance technology & data is ever-present, we are taking a moment to acknowledge its persuasiveness. The video features nods to the ‘Pop art’ era - drawing influences from a commercial culture where consumerism flourishes."
