Hiatus Kaiyote Are Still Your Favourite Artist's Favourite Band: Doja Cat Covers 'Red Room'

Say So hitmaker Doja Cat has taken on Australian icons Hiatus Kaiyote in the BBC Live Lounge, tackling the smooth jazz/R&B number Red Room from the band’s 2021 LP, Mood Valiant.

Mood Valiant was Hiatus Kaiyote’s first album in over five years.

Sitting on a stool in the BBC studio, Doja’s vocals recall the buttery essence of Hiatus Kaiyote singer Nai Palm, with her band providing a seamless jazz arrangement. The cover becomes more powerful as Doja’s backing singers join her, making for a neo-soul commemoration of an Aussie classic.

Doja Cat has already won the approval of Hiatus Kaiyote, with the band writing on their Instagram Stories, “Doja Cat doing a pretty solid cover of ‘Red Room.’ Hiatus Kaiyote still your artist’s favourite artist.”

This week, Doja Cat landed her ninth week at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with Paint The Town Red, becoming the second-longest running #1 single for 2023.

On Monday, Hiatus Kaiyote made an exciting announcement, revealing a one-off gig at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall with The Dreamboat Orchestra.

Taking to the Hamer Hall stage on Friday, 23 February, the band will be joined by The Dreamboat Orchestra, with orchestral arrangements by Miguel Atwood Ferguson, the composer who wrote the cult-classic J Dilla score Suite For Ma Dukes, and the arrangements of Brazilian legend Arthur Verocai.

“After orchestra shows at Hollywood Bowl and Sydney Opera House, we're thrilled to bring them to our hometown,” Hiatus Kaiyote said in a press release. “It will be a dream to perform these stunning arrangements in the Hamer Hall; we can't wait to share this experience with you.”

Doja Cat dropped her highly-anticipated new album, Scarlet, on 22 September, which stunned fans with a grand total of zero (0) collabs.
