DMA’S guitarist Johnny Took has teamed up with Steve and Liz Hibberd to bring Melbourne’s newest creative space, Small Time Studios, to life.
Situated in the trendy suburb of Brunswick, Small Time Studios is a welcome addition to the area that sports music venues, pubs, and universities; introducing “vibey” writing rooms built to empower musicians in their songwriting ventures.
The Hibberds founded Small Time Group alongside producer James Seymour (Katie Wighton, Merpire, Eaglemont) in 2019.
According to a press release, Small Time Studios hosts charming and exceptional facilities with an impressive gear list, including an astonishing selection of synths, guitars, and microphones for artists to utilise during their sessions.
Small Time Studios currently holds three writing rooms, with more coming soon, as well as one production space.
“After a challenging launch and subsequent years through multiple lockdowns and plans changing constantly, the unwavering support of so many people in the music industry has been overwhelming; we’re really thankful,” Steve Hibberd said in a statement. “We’re pumped to finally be able to 100% focus on the music, and to be launching Small Time Studios with Johnny, Hayley [Mary] and family”.

Took added, “I couldn't be more excited to team up with my mate Steve on this journey that involves our mutual passion for music!
“Being able to use my love and experience of songwriting to provide a space for creativity is a dream come true. Small Time Studios has the infrastructure to be able to support and educate young musicians; a space like this holds so much potential and its location in the heart of Brunswick couldn't be more perfect.”
Johnny Took told The Music about DMA’S' current inspirations in a recent interview, “We just love so many different types of music. Even though we love lo-fi jangling, we also love big, pop, hi-fi stuff and synth-programmed beats. I guess it’s about finding the best way to get it all out of your system.”
