David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's story about former Philippines first lady Imelda Marcos, the "immersive disco pop musical," is coming to Broadway this year.
Here Lies Love will premiere at New York’s Broadway Theatre on 20 July, with previews beginning on 17 June. The collaboration between the Talking Heads singer and famous DJ has already seen two iterations: as a 2010 album and a stage musical at the Public Theater, New York, in 2013.
Alex Timbers will direct the Broadway version of Here Lies Love, and Annie-B Parson will lead the choreography. According to a statement, the Broadway Theatre stage will become interactive by being converted "into a dance club environment, where audiences will stand and move with the actors."
"As a team of binational American producers – Filipinos among us – we are thrilled to bring Here Lies Love to Broadway," a statement shared by the producers of Here Lies Love reads (via Deadline). "We welcome everyone to experience this singularly exuberant piece of theatre. The history of the Philippines is inseparable from the history of the United States, and as both evolve, we cannot think of a more appropriate time to stage this show. See you on the dance floor!"

The Music's review of David Byrne's American Utopia found that "Ultimately, American Utopia brings to life the tension that has always made Byrne so interesting. An artist who thinks and overthinks and plans and prepares immaculately, then, in the act of performance, attempts to fill his creations with spontaneity," and added, "Byrne has made the whole show about the wonder of others; an artful presentation of life in the United States in 2020, with anxiety replaced with empathy."
