He is the great Daniel Johns. He needs Beavis and Butt-Head for a collab.
In very unexpected but welcome news, Daniel Johns has teamed with Beavis and Butt-Head.
A limited-edition merch collaboration was unveiled today via a clip of a young Johns sitting on a couch between Beavis and Butt-Head.
The animation is soundtracked to a ‘reclaimed’ version of Frogstomp favourite Israel’s Son and the trio chuckling.
Shirts and prints featuring the couch design will be available at Daniel Johns exhibition Past, Present & FutureNever at the Rialto Melbourne and via the Radio Velvet website.
“Nobody understands global ‘90s teenage fame like Beavis and Butt-Head,” Johns said. “As silverchair began to blow up in the US, I was obsessed with Beavis and Butt-Head. A career highlight was when they absolutely roasted my haircut and music while watching the Tomorrow video - in retrospect I think I deserved it.
“Beavis and Butt-Head felt like school friends to me. In the ‘90s I’d religiously watch VHS tapes I’d brought back from US tours I’d done with silverchair. I didn’t leave the house much so sometimes they were the only company I had. To be chilling with them, jamming to Israel’s Son and having a good laugh in the FutureNever is as good as any therapist’s couch.”

Johns’ latest solo album, FutureNever, returned to #1 on the ARIA charts last week, making it the only Australian album to spend 2 weeks at #1 in 2022. It’s also now the highest-selling 2022 album release by an Australian artist.
Johns has experienced a topsy-turvy year so far, with his new album's success, a semi-autobiographical film on the way, and starting a charity foundation being some of the best moments; he has also clashed with ex-Silverchair bandmate Ben Gillies and been in a traumatic car crash where he couldn't "play or listen to music" since the accident and a stint in rehab followed it. Johns also stated that he was experiencing a "full-blown nervous breakdown" at the time.
The Past, Present & FutureNever exhibition is the boldest thing Johns has been a part of. In a statement, he revealed, "For 45 minutes, people can physically time travel back to my childhood and into the FutureNever in a way that provides a greater insight into my creative process and personal life than any live concert could ever hope to achieve. It's literally a lifetime of work that has gone into it."
