After announcing the release of their new album, Gravity Stairs, with the first single, Oh Hi, Crowded House have unveiled the cheerful new track, Teenage Summer.
Evoking wistful feelings of going on road trips with friends with the bright harmonies and melodies of Simon & Garfunkel, Crowded House’s new number asks, “Are we gonna have some teenage summer?/ Am I gonna have some mad idea?”
In a statement, Neil Finn revealed that the song runs deeper than releasing a new single. “My grandson Manaia told me ‘Teenage Summer’ was one of his favourite songs,” Finn said. “He'd identified the peak moment in the song, and a light went on. It's that simple: the children must be heard.”

The second single from Gravity Stairs, the new album drops via BMG on Friday, 31 May. On the new album, Crowded House—the current band line-up comprising Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, Mitchell Froom, and Finn’s sons Elroy and Liam—teamed up with Steven Schram, known for producing albums for Paul Kelly and San Cisco.
The singer-songwriter said about the album title, “It's a metaphor for getting a little older and becoming aware of your own mortality, your own physicality. Things are getting a little harder, and there's more determination needed to get to the top, but there's still the same compulsion to climb them.”

Last month, the band were honoured with the second-ever Icon Award at this year’s Rolling Stone Australia Awards.
Upon accepting the award, Finn said, “Thank you, Rolling Stone, for making us into an icon. I'm not sure what that truly means, but I think it means you need to go to Mecca and buy some makeup, so I've done that. I'd like to thank all the band members of Crowded House, so I'm representing them; they send their love. For everybody, thank you so much for honouring us in this fashion.”
Also last month, Crowded House performed at the inaugural Global Citizen NOW summit in Melbourne.
Crowded House’s 2021 album, Dreamers Are Waiting, was their first album in over ten years. It followed 2010’s Intriguer and debuted at #2 on the ARIA Albums Chart upon its release.
