Melbourne City Council are set to rename a laneway behind the now-closed Palace Theatre after the late rock icon Chrissy Amphlett.

Amphlett, frontwoman of the Divinyls, died in April last year at the age of 53 following a battle with breast cancer. In August council agreed in principle to name a laneway after being presented with a petition of over 6,000 signatures.

According to Fairfax the Council have now identified CL1639 (Corporation Lane 1639) at the top of Little Bourke St and alongside Ovolo Hotel. Councillors will now vote on the proposal to change the name to ‘Amphlett Lane’ next Tuesday.

Music Victoria's CEO Patrick Donovan previously told theMusic.com.au, "Naming Laneways in honour of musicians is a wonderful way to honour their contribution to society. AC/DC Lane [in Melbourne] is the rock hub of Melbourne where music fans from all over the world congregate and celebrate Aussie rock'n'roll.”

He added, “The Rowland S Howard laneway in St Kilda will ensure that Rowland's contribution to our culture is never forgotten. Music Victoria throws its support behind recognising Chrissy Amphlett in such a way."
