Corey Taylor Performs 'SpongeBob Squarepants' With SpongeBob Voice Actor Tom Kenny

Corey Taylor has played the scariest performance of his career, joining SpongeBob Squarepants voice actor himself Tom Kenny for a rendition of the SpongeBob Squarepants theme tune.

In case you’re unfamiliar with how the hell Slipknot vocalist and SpongeBob go together, Taylor has been playing the theme tune since (at least) July 2011, when it was first recorded on Setlist.fm. He plays the song during his solo shows, acoustic or with a full band, wedged between Stone Sour’s Song #3 and Slipknot’s Snuff in October 2022.

His metal rasp goes surprisingly well with children’s music – you can check it out for yourself below.

Joining Tom Kenny and a band at the Huntington Comic and Toy Convention in West Virginia on Saturday (12 August), Taylor and his mohawk took to the stage for the pleasant surprise, accompanying the actor who voices the titular SpongeBob character.

“This is the most nervous I’ve ever been in my whole career,” Taylor remarked in a YouTube video below. “How the hell did I get here, guys?” Watch the duet below.

Corey Taylor is releasing his second solo album, CMF2, on Friday, 15 September, via Decibel Cooper Recordings. He’s released two singles from the record so far – Beyond in May and the ferocious Post Traumatic Blues in July – each of which was different but strong in its own way.

“Post Traumatic Blues is my attempt to describe for people what it’s like to deal with PTSD,” Taylor said in a statement about the latter single.

“Sometimes it’s so hard for people to understand the ups and downs, the severity of the cold and numbness, that I wanted to try and build a bridge lyrically between the ones living with the disease and the ones who are trying to help them.”

Unlike Post Traumatic Blues, Beyond doesn’t sound like a Slipknot song, or even a Stone Sour song, for that matter. It’s a fresh solo outing from the Duality singer that finds him exploring the raw rasp in his voice and testing new melodic waters in a circus-inspired music video.

CMF2 follows Taylor’s 2020 debut solo album, CMFT, which peaked at #8 in Australia. “My first solo album was kind of where I was coming from. This album is more where we're going,” Taylor explained in a press release. You can pre-order the album here.
