There is no mistaking that CHEZ means business on her latest single, honeY. With its hypnotic trap percussion and unapologetically candid lyrics, this track invites you not only to dance and scream along, but also connect with its message.

The fifth single of the year from Chezni Watson’s alter ego CHEZ, honeY is a powerful ode to Watson’s own experience with insecurities in relationships.

“‘You can call me honey, but I think it’s kinda funny that you like me,’ fell out of my lips as we were vibing over the drum and bass loop,” Watson recalls of the creative process with her partner Reece Lenzo.

“It then sparked a massive wave of emotions. I struggle with opening up about insecurities and letting people in, so the fact something so serious came out so easily, I knew this topic had to be shared.”

The Perth (Boorloo) based artist is notably candid in her work, but honeY is as personal as we’ve seen her.

Watson says of the work, “it allowed me to finally face emotions I have attempted to suppress for so long and refused to write about. But it also gave me the courage to laugh at myself a little and not take myself so seriously.”

“I think the track lends itself to this make-fun-of-yourself shoulder bop jiggle when you listen to it.”

Sonically, honeY drew inspiration from Billie Eilish, with Watson flagging the 2019 single bad guy particularly influential.

“Think heavy groovy dark bass with pulsating and fun production. It was really fun to add certain sounds, percussion and vox production we haven’t used in previous releases. It’s honestly so simple but has so much character within the track.”

Watson has also weaved “a fun little surprise” into honeY’s outro.

“It’s honestly my favourite part of the whole song,” she shares. “A little jazz number, because why not? It was so much fun to fuse genres into one big chaotic sticky mess.”

The best kind of chaos, honeY is now Watson’s “favourite song to play live.”

“It means so much to me and is very much a relatable topic, and it’s so rewarding watching a crowd of people who barely know you, move to the song the way we intended it - fun and carefree.”

Watson will have plenty of opportunities to blast her new single live, supporting American rock group Set It Off on their Australian tour this November.

“I can’t wait to play honeY and cause some chaos with my band on stage!”

Watson encourages us to stay tuned, teasing “another cheeky release” is on the horizon. In the meantime, we’re more than happy to be stuck with honeY.
