Best Coast, the beloved US indie rock duo starring vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Bethany Cosentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno, is going on hiatus as Cosentino is ready to embark on a solo career.
Since their formation in 2009, Best Coast released four albums, 2010’s Crazy For You, 2012’s The Only Place, 2015’s California Nights, and their most recent, Always Tomorrow, released in February 2020.
Best Coast celebrated the tenth anniversary of Crazy For You in August 2020 with a live stream on Seated. The live stream marked the first time Best Coast had performed the album in its entirety. To honour the album, Cosentino and Bruno enlisted some of their friends, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry as special guests on the night.
Just hours ago, Cosentino announced that she’s releasing a solo album, Natural Disaster, on Friday, 28 July, and gave fans the first taste of her solo music with It’s Fine, a single produced by the legendary Butch Walker (P!nk, Katy Perry, Adam Lambert, Fall Out Boy), which you can hear below.
She also announced that Best Coast is going on “indefinite hiatus” in a statement. Cosentino wrote:
“The decision to put Best Coast on indefinite pause was honestly not an easy one. I have heavily identified with Best Coast for over a decade, and therefore being anyone but ‘Bethany from Best Coast’ has felt very uncomfortable for me.

"The last few years have brought about many changes for myself and the entire world - and I decided to push myself through the discomfort of it all and go try out being someone else. This record is a product of that.
“This band (and Bobb) mean everything to me, always will - but for now - I need to go explore being just … Bethany Cosentino. Me, myself and I!
“Thank you for always accepting me for who I am, even when I wasn’t sure who that was. Best Coast fans are the absolute best (no pun intended) and I hope that you will follow along with me while I embark on this new journey.”
