Aus Country Singer Reveals Plans To Wed Partner Once Marriage Equality Passes

On the heels of today's confirmation of a plebiscite on same-sex marriage to be held in February next year, country-music star Beccy Cole has announced her intention to wed her partner, cabaret singer Libby O'Donovan, as soon as the law is changed in favour of marriage equality.

Cole is set to reveal her matrimonial plans on an upcoming episode of Australian Story titled When Beccy Met Libby, which sees the nine-time Golden Guitar winner recount the circumstances of her proposal, at O'Donovan's 40th birthday party back in January, as well as how she met the fellow performer at a pride event in Adelaide, shortly after Cole's previous appearance on the program — during which she came out as gay — in 2012.

"I don't know whether you call it 'love at first sight' or what it is, but I knew I was safe, I knew I was home, I knew this was it and I haven't doubted it for a second ever since," Cole says in the episode, which also delves into their family life. Presently, the couple live in Adelaide with two children from previous relationships, "sort of like a big gay Brady Bunch", and hope O'Donovan's parents, both Anglican ministers, will perform the ceremony.

"I’ve never wanted to be political or a flag-waver, but when it’s something that you really believe in, and something that affects you directly and you can see it affecting people within your community, then I think there is a time to stand up and say, 'Come on, let’s get this right,'" she said.
