"You'll be rewarded because they'll be telling your Australian story. It's not 'The Crown', it's your story."

More Aunty Donna More Aunty Donna

Aunty Donna's Netflix series has been a global hit , but the Melbourne comedy trio want more local content to be championed in Australia specifically.

Appearing on a new episode of The Green Room with Neil Griffiths podcast, Aunty Donna members Broden Kelly and Mark Samual Bonanno discussed the success of Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House Of Fun years after creating two different pilots that were not picked up in Australia.

"I don't think [Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House Of Fun] would have flown purely because in Australia we have to be less risk averse," Bonanno told host Neil Griffiths.

"Because there's a smaller population, things have to be of a certain level to be successful and there's not a lot of room unfortunately for niche."

Kelly added, "I think the most successful show in Australia is Married At First Sight. Unfortunately, that's what the case is.

"There's some awesome comedy and drama made in Australia, but the amount of Australians that watch it relative to the rest of the world, is pretty, pretty small."

Kelly believes the answer is simple - Australians need to support Australian content.

"I think Australians need to fucking start watching good shit," he said.

"It's the same with music. Like, put on King Gizzard... there's awesome creators out there and you should just take the time and effort to go and find them and watch their stuff.

"They don't have to be on networks either. They can be on YouTube or on podcasts or doing live shows.

"They're out there and if you go find them, you're gonna have an awesome time and you'll be rewarded because they'll be telling your Australian story. It's not The Crown, it's your story.

"We need to do a better job of supporting Australians who are doing good shit. But also, networks need to say 'We have a responsibility to show Australia' as well. For sure."

On The Green Room episode, Kelly and Bonanno revealed the wild story of how Aunty Donna locked in the massive Netflix deal and couldn't tell anyone about it for over a year.
