It’s a good day to be a fan of Alex The Astronaut and Paul Kelly, with the legendary singer-songwriter teaming up with Alex on the new single Cold Pizza.
A bright, optimistic tune ready to bring us all into spring, Cold Pizza is anchored by a ukulele and Alex’s always relatable, commanding voice, with their unmistakable songwriting abilities matching up with Kelly’s.
Alex The Astronaut gave fans a taste of the track on Wednesday (21 August) via an online presentation, making it through PowerPoint.
“I wanted to make this PowerPoint because I think it’s fun, the designs are much better than when I last used PowerPoint in year three, and I wanted to share this with the people who listen to my music—it’s been a while,” Alex shared in a statement.
Cold Pizza is an arresting exploration of “heartbreak and nostalgia,” per a press release, inspired by Alex’s own anecdote about eating a shared meal on the floor. It’s bittersweet, like any song digging into the aftermath of lost love should be.
Alex said about their new song and the Paul Kelly co-write, “To get to write a song about pizza with Mr Paul Kelly was my absolute childhood dream come true. The idea for the song started from a line in my notebook; ‘Today, for lunch, I had the margarita pizza we had sitting on the floor.’”

They continued, “I had three chords and a breakup to go from, and we were on. I love to race write, and Paul was like a wise tree, taking time to ponder over every line. Together we built the song up like a Lego into something that brought a tear to my eye when I read over the lyrics at the end of the day. Now it’s recorded and alive, and I can’t wait to share the magic of Cold Pizza with everyone.”
