The AFL is reportedly in “advanced stages” of talks with Katy Perry’s team about locking in the music superstar to provide this year’s AFL Grand Final pre-game headline entertainment. Last year, the AFL locked in KISS - after Crowded House reportedly dropped out.
Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper reports that the AFL has been in talks with Perry’s management about securing a multimillion-dollar deal, with sources telling the publication that the 2024 pre-game entertainment will be “absolutely outstanding”.
A spokesperson for the AFL, Jay Allen, said that the music line-up for the AFL Grand Final will be announced soon.
In a statement, Allen remarked, “In recent years, the Toyota AFL Grand Final headline performances have been world-class, and we are excited to deliver another spectacular show ahead of the biggest game of the season.
“We will be in a position to make an announcement on this year’s Telstra pre-game entertainment shortly.”
The big day will take place on Saturday, 28 September.

Katy Perry last toured Australia in August 2018 on her Witness tour. She visited Australia again in March 2020 – not long before the borders closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic – for a performance at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup at the MCG and a bushfire relief concert at the Pioneer Park Recreation Reserve in Bright, Victoria.
Back in February, Perry played a private concert for billionaire Anthony Pratt in Melbourne.
Katy Perry is releasing a new single called Woman’s World tomorrow, sharing a new teaser for the track yesterday (10 July). But overnight, she revealed the release date for her forthcoming album – the follow-up to 2020’s Smile.
Perry will release her new album, 143, on Friday, 20 September. In a statement (via Pitchfork), she said about the LP, “I set out to create a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message.”
Decorated songwriters and producers such as Sarah Hudson, Stargate, Vaughn Oliver, Rocco Valdes and Theron Thomas have been tapped to reunite with Perry on her new album, along with two of her best-known collaborators, Max Martin and Dr Luke.
The internet has been in uproar over the namedrop of Dr Luke (Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald) in particular, after the lengthy and painful duration of the legal battle between the producer and singer Kesha.
Kesha accused the producer of sexual assault, battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, and emotional abuse. Upon hearing of the news of Perry first announcing her reunion with Dr Luke on Woman’s World, Kesha took to X (formerly Twitter), tweeting a single “lol”.
